Student Tennis Benefits: Strength, Mental, Social

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the simple ways that tennis courts and the sport of tennis benefit students of varying ages on their educational campuses. Tennis is not only a great way of maintaining fitness, but also is excellent for everything from tactics and game-planning to socializing and more.

At Courts Unlimited, we proudly offer a wide range of both residential and commercial tennis court surfacing, resurfacing and other solutions to clients around Utah. Educational facilities are common locations for various courts we offer, including tennis courts. Today’s part two of our series will look at some other basic benefits of tennis for students as they develop.

Improving Strength

Because the sport of tennis involves continuous movement, students who play the sport will see notable increases in strength as they progress. The quick movements and need to react with the ball mean both upper and lower body muscles are frequently utilized here, increasing their demand and leading to additional strength gains.

This is particularly beneficial for younger students who may still be developing physically – tennis allows them to improve their musculature while also having fun, rather than needing to go through focused workouts which may not hold their attention.

Some of the specific areas of musculature that will develop as students play tennis:

  • Shoulders and upper back
  • Chest and biceps
  • Forearms and wrists
  • Calves and hamstrings

Mental Health Boosts

Another major area of benefit for students who play tennis is their mental health – the sport offers several areas of stress relief that are vital for a student’s overall well-being. Tennis players are known to have lower levels of anxiety and depression, plus report improved self-esteem and self-worth.

Additionally, when combined with regular exercise, tennis can also improve sleep quality and reduce symptoms of ADHD in students. This makes it an excellent activity for students who may struggle with these common issues, and offers them a healthy outlet to manage their mental well-being.

Educational and Social Development

Finally, tennis is known to offer significant educational and social benefits for students who participate in the sport. When practicing tennis, students must constantly think about strategy and tactics to outplay their opponent – this helps develop critical thinking skills and improves problem-solving abilities.

Furthermore, playing tennis also allows students to develop strong teamwork skills when playing doubles matches with partners. Even in singles matches, players are frequently encouraged to join local clubs or teams, which gives them the opportunity to meet new people and build important social skills.
