In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the most common myths out there surrounding the great game of tennis. While some of these misconceptions aren’t really harmful, there might be cases where others stop people from trying out or enjoying tennis, and that’s no good for anyone.
At Courts Unlimited, we’re proud to provide a wide range of tennis courts, basketball courts, pickleball courts and more to clients around Utah. What are some of the other most common myths we’ve heard regarding tennis and tennis courts? Here are a few, plus the proper information on each.
Myth #4: Tennis is Too Intense a Sport
While some only know tennis from watching professional versions of it, where it’s indeed true that players are intense and the matches can be stressful to watch, the fact of the matter is that at its core, tennis is a sport that’s just as much about focus and strategy as it is about strength and endurance. And for many people, it’s about enjoyment of the game more than about winning.
Tennis offers numerous opportunities to continuously improve, and it’s a great game for people at any fitness level– or even for those who may be starting or recovering from an injury. Learning the basics of tennis is fairly simple, though there are some complexities to master as players improve.
Myth #5: My Technique is Bad, So Tennis Isn’t “Meant” for Me
For some reason, we’ve found that there are some people who firmly believe that tennis skill is purely genetic in nature. They assume that if their parents didn’t teach them to play, or if they don’t have any natural talent for the game, then tennis isn’t something that can be learned.
This is just flat out untrue. Tennis is just like anything else in that it takes proper instruction and lots of practice, but learning how to do it doesn’t take nearly as much innate talent as you might think. Even if your form is awful as you’re first getting started, you can quickly gain experience and improve.
Myth #6: Tennis is Only a US Pursuit
Not only is this completely false, it’s the opposite of the truth — there are actually many places around the globe where tennis is more popular than it is in the U.S. Tennis is huge in Europe, Australia, South America and Asia, among others; even India has more than 10 million players! No matter where you live in the world today, there’s probably a high chance that tennis is actually one of the most popular sports there.
