Student Tennis Benefits: Skills, Fitness, Intervals

There are several forms of activity that can be enormously beneficial for students of varying ages, and one of the most beneficial for many such students is the game of tennis. Not only is tennis a great form of exercise that helps maintain fitness in developing bodies, it’s an engaging, highly tactical game that often stimulates many teens and young adults mentally as well as physically.

At Courts Unlimited, we’re proud to offer a wide range of both residential and commercial tennis court surfacing, resurfacing and related services to clients around Utah, in addition to our basketball courts, pickleball courts and more. We’ve helped install courts in many commercial locations, including various schools or other educational facilities. In this two-part blog series, we’ll go over all the varying benefits of tennis for student-aged kids, from fitness to several others.

Learning New Motions and Skills

Because tennis involves the use of a racket for striking a ball, it’s an excellent way to learn some fine motor skills if you’re new to the sport. This applies not only to younger kids, but also may still apply to those in their teens, for whom such development is not fully complete yet.

The eye-hand coordination and other motor skill benefits developed through tennis can have value for many aspects of life, including everything from other sports and activities to basic tasks like writing with a pen or driving a car. These skills are generally developed through regular tennis play at any level, helping both young and older players hone their physical abilities.

General Fitness

Keeping in good shape is important for development among kids of any age, and tennis is one of the best ways to do so. Playing tennis for just three hours per week can improve aerobic fitness levels and help with metabolic systems, even in those who are overweight or obese.

In addition, regular play helps exercise several muscle groups throughout the body while also increasing flexibility and coordination. This makes it an all-inclusive workout suitable for people of all ages and levels of physical ability.

Use of Intense Intervals

Because of the nature of tennis, where points are played at intense levels followed by periods of rest, the sport teaches players how to manage these ups and downs. Whether it’s through long rallies that push players physically or quick serves, tennis tests both endurance and strength in varying ways.

This also leads to physical benefits, such as increased cardiovascular fitness, stamina development and more. This will ultimately lead to an overall improved physical state of health for young students who play regularly.

In part two of our series, we’ll look at some other benefits of tennis for student-aged children, including mental stimulation and potential educational benefits.
