Designing a Tennis Court: Budget, Zoning, Measuring

For those properties where tennis courts are present, they’re enormously beneficial in several ways. Those looking to build a new tennis court on any part of their property will have a few important considerations to keep in mind while they’re doing so, however.

At Courts Unlimited, we’re happy to offer the very best in both residential and commercial tennis court installations across Utah. What are some of these important elements that we’ll help you navigate as you design the perfect tennis court for your property? This two-part blog series will go over several.

Budget

First and foremost, you should be taking the time to consider your budget. Tennis courts, even small ones, aren’t cheap to install. You’ll need to factor in the cost of materials, excavation, labor, and landscaping.

Budgeting will depend on a number of things, including several of the concepts we’ll go over later in this series. You should have at least some flexibility within your budget, but should also have a good idea of what you’re willing to spend and where your absolute limit will be.

Local Zoning or Other Regulations

Next up, just to ensure you don’t run into any issues that might derail your plans later on, you’ll want to check with your local zoning or other regulations. Your city or municipality may have specific building codes for tennis courts that need to be followed.

These can vary widely, from specifying the height of the fence around the court to how much light must be available at night. You’ll also want to make sure that any trees or other obstructions that might interfere with play are taken into account.

In addition, especially if you’re building a residential court, you may need to consider any HOA (homeowners’ association) rules or regulations that may apply. These can vary quite a bit, so it’s always best to be on the safe side and check early on in the process. Of course, if you don’t live within the guise of an HOA, there’s no need to worry about this.

Measuring Property Space

Another vital area to be mindful of is the space you have available on your property. Obviously, a tennis court needs to be of a certain size in order to be playable, so you’ll need to measure out the dimensions and make sure there’s enough room.

There’s also the question of how much space you’ll need for spectators, if that’s something you’re interested in. You’ll want to allow for a good distance between the court and any benches or seating you might have, and also make sure the area is well-lit for evening play.
